Why Ceramic Planters Can Leak Water

A decorative finish does not by itself establish water containment. Start by distinguishing a planter designed to drain from a cachepot intended to retain water.

Define where the water should go

Water passing through an intended drainage hole is different from water escaping through the body or a damaged area. Before reviewing a ceramic sample, say whether it is a direct-planting container with drainage, a decorative cachepot around a grower pot, or a vessel expected to hold water.

At Xiamen Green, water containment is an important quality-control discussion. We review the intended use together with the ceramic body, finish and any protective coating or internal cup. The same attractive surface can be used in products with different water-use requirements.

A buyer's brief should state whether the arrangement includes a drainage hole, saucer, removable grower pot or liner. It should also identify surfaces that need protection and how the user will water the plant.

Review the body and glaze together

Firing and the resulting body density affect water absorption. Glaze fit and the condition of the finished piece also matter. Technical ceramic references describe leakage involving porous bodies, glaze cracks and other defects; a firing-temperature label or glossy appearance alone is not a finished-product test.

Our production-coordination practice gives particular attention to protective coatings for lower-fired products, including relevant dolomite and terracotta programs. The appropriate treatment depends on the product and intended use. Do not assume that every item described by the same material label has the same treatment.

When a buyer reports water escape, describe the observation before deciding the cause: where the water appeared, whether drainage was intended, the condition of the item and how it was used. A photograph may help identify what needs investigation, but it does not by itself establish a technical diagnosis.

Specify coatings and liners explicitly

For programs requiring a separate water barrier, we commonly add a plastic cup as an internal liner. This makes the containment arrangement part of the product specification instead of relying only on the decorative ceramic shell.

The liner still needs to work with the complete product. Confirm its fit, whether it is included with every unit, the intended water level and how it will be inserted or removed. If it is used with a grower pot, review the combined fit rather than measuring the ceramic opening alone.

A liner should not be described as a blanket “100% waterproof” promise. The specified assembly and its intended use need to be checked. Keep the approved coating or liner arrangement connected to the sample, quotation and inspection requirements.

Make water use an approval point

Before ordering, agree what the water-use review needs to establish. The following is a buyer preparation checklist, not a universal laboratory procedure:

  • Identify the product reference, body, finish and drainage configuration.
  • Record the coating, liner and saucer arrangement being reviewed.
  • Agree the test conditions, observation period and acceptance criteria for the intended application.
  • Record observations separately from conclusions about their cause.
  • Confirm what production inspection will check and what changes require another review.

Our four-sample approval arrangement gives the buyer, factory and QC team a reference, with a backup retained at Xiamen Green. It does not replace an agreed water-use check. Review grower-pot fit where a liner and production pot share the same interior space.
